Academic Developmental Editing

As an academic myself, I know how valuable encouraging feedback and practical guidance can be for graduate students and early scholars. I know, first-hand, the frustration of myopia—that feeling of not being able to see the big picture of a project and, because of that, not knowing what to do next. I also know the relief of having a pair of fresh eyes on a project. offering a way out of the tunnel. Or maybe you’ve already completed the project, and you just need a voice reassuring you that the work is ready to send out.

Academic Projects

With nearly 20 years’ experience in education, I am an ideal editor for academic projects at any stage. This service includes a full read of your manuscript and a detailed editorial letter covering issues of content, structure, and style. I especially read for argument, including claims and evidence. After a holistic reading, I provide feedback about issues seen throughout the entire manuscript. I may also provide suggestions for the text at the paragraph and sentence level. Clients may find this more helpful than peer review in that identified problems are presented with possible solutions. First, I identify your driving thesis and suggest ways to pull this through the entire manuscript. Second, I locate a strategy to strengthen your argument. Some manuscripts may need condensing, while others will desire more content, which I will help brainstorm. This service is useful for writers who seek to revise the content and structure of their project. I offer a bird’s-eye-view of your project with a pragmatic, actionable way forward. 

I am particularly passionate about helping graduate students finish their theses and dissertations, so they can begin the rest of their lives.

The assessment is billed based on the length of your document, and includes two video or phone strategy sessions with me: one before I read your materials so I can understand your goals for your project and one after you receive my editorial letter so we can strategize next steps.
